Does Talc Powder Cause Cancer?

|

Whether for addictive opioids or dangerous bathroom products, Johnson & Johnson has been in the news a lot this year. We know for sure that opioids are dangerous, but what about talcum powder?

Over 14,000 Claims

Johnson & Johnson faces over 14,000 lawsuits that link ovarian cancer and mesothelioma to the use of J&J baby powder and Shower-to-Shower body powder. According to claimants, the talcum powder in J&J products contained hints of asbestos, a substance that is carcinogenic to humans. Additionally, these powders were promoted for everyday genital use, especially among African American women and other minorities.

When used every day, talc can be absorbed by the reproductive system and cause inflammation in the ovaries. Because J&J knew about this risk and refused to warn consumers, their omission is the basis for countless product liability claims.

Damages Awarded

So far, Johnson & Johnson has been ordered to pay $72 million for the death of an Alabama woman, $4.7 billion to 22 families affected by ovarian cancer, and $25 million to a 66-year-old woman with mesothelioma. The company is currently under criminal investigation by federal authorities and faces a hearing that will decide the validity of nearly 11,000 pending cases.

Overall, both the civil and criminal systems are investigating claims that J&J knew its talc powder contained carcinogens and failed to advise the public appropriately. Worse, the company continued to market the product as safe.

Pursuing Justice

While the results of J&J’s hearing are pending, and a grand jury is deciding the company’s fate, victims are continuing to come forward. If you have developed ovarian cancer or mesothelioma through the use of J&J talc powders, you may be able to hold the company accountable as well. Even if you have lost a loved one to one of these diseases, it is never too late for justice.
